about

First Splash was recorded at Plug Seven Studio on the 7th of July 2019. Our vision was to record the entire album (eight tracks) in one take in order to capture the energy of our live sound. We recorded two takes of the album through the studio’s Neve Console into their Tascam 16 track tape machine, although only eight tracks were used with the goal of capturing the ambient sound of the room whilst recording.

The album consists of four arrangements of existing tunes and four original pieces. Rubberneckin’ and Cobweb are the results of a songwriting experiment we tried during rehearsals. The exercise consisted of setting a timer for 30 minutes and forcing ourselves to create a whole song from scratch. At the end of the 30 minutes, we would record a basic demo and put it in the tune bank. These two originals were composed two weeks prior to the recording session.

Spiced Rum was written by bassist Jamie Stroud, as well as C’est Pas Moi with the help of Kenny Berthelot (Koba) on vocals and lyrics. The lyrics to the latter were written by Kenny in his mother tongue, a French based Mauritius Creole. As the final song of the album, we decided to go all out; overdubbing vocals and a plethora of other instruments to contrast with the rawness of the rest of the album.

The session was engineered by our friend Carl Lindeberg, which was bounced from tape and digitally mixed by Jamie. The album was then mastered by Lachlan Carrick of Moose Mastering. Our vision for the artwork on album cover and labels was fulfilled by another friend Sophia Temporali, who has worked with DT5 since its inception.

For their contributions to and support of the record, we’d like to thank the following people: Shannen Wick of Stoic Records, James Davies, Liona Tatafu, Janna Tatafu, Matt Sheers, Vincent Ward, Chloe Sanger, Ely Ruttico, and Chris Gill.

This record was made on the Wurundjeri land of the Kulin Nation. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
